Vegetable farmers in Kwara state, on Thursday, were opportuned to be confronted with the hidden treasures in their trade. Aptly tagged Kwara Go-Veg the event which was held at the Kwara Agro Mall it put to shame the many excuses of Nigerians for not venturing into farming.
In the words of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture and Rural Water Support Services, Anu Ibiwoye, the initiative is “aimed at sensitizing farmers on the untapped money making potentials in vegetables farming, building the capacity of vegetable farmers in Kwara state to increase their productivity/profitability, linking farmers to the available export windows for vegetable produce, empowering vegetable farmers to cultivate a minimum of 1,600 acres of Ugu, Bitter-leaf, Cucumber, Pepper and other vegetable (across the State) through synergy and revealing the numerous opportunities available to every actor in the vegetable value chain, which enables Kwara farmers to make more wealth and finally ensure that Kwara-people feed-well and live healthy.”
According to him, the project is also aimed at identifying and recognizing “the efforts of vegetable farmers in Kwara state, build their capcity through practical trainings in collaboration with research institutes and enhance their living standard through collaborative empowerment scheme.”
He assured that the initiative will ensure that vegetable farmers will have new insights, be encouraged to do more and be empowered but above all he expressed optimism that participants present “will be motivated and challenged to start vegetable farming most especially ugu, bitter-leaf, cucumber and pepper.”
The initiative is timely in view of the readiness of both the federal and states government to be freed from the dungeon of over dependence on oil revenue. Coming back to agriculture will not only yield foreign exchange but like in the case of vegetables it will also ensure a healthy eating lifestyle.
Vegetable farming, as elucidated during the seminar, has many advantages which this piece will not be able to accommodate but most importantly it does not require much land and is very cheap to start. It was an eye opener to participants at the occasion that anyone can start vegetable farming in sacks at his\her backyard with as little as N200
With the readiness of the Kwara State Government with the introduction of the Go-Veg. initiative to ensure that vegetable farmers in the state have access to all technical support needed to boost vegetable farming in the state the ball is now in the court of all Kwarans to go to their backyard and take immediate advantage of this farmers’ cash cow.
