Speaker of the House, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, mandated the Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downsteam),(Upstream),and Justice to within 30 days investigate the veracity of the allegation and report back to the House
Hon. Hassan Saleh, in a motion tagged "the need to call on the Chief of Naval Staff to name 0il Companies that are aiding oil theft in the nation's Coastal Waters urged the House to probe oil theft
According to Hon,Salleh on 3 September, 2014, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Usman Jibrin, at a meeting with oil companies operating in the country, threatened to expose some International oil companies which are alleged to be aiding and abetting oil theft in the nation’s coastal waters.
According to him Jibrin, made this very grievous allegation to express his dismay and frustration at the nonchalant attitude of some of the Chief Executive Officers of the International Oil Companies at the meeting.
He said that the issue of oil theft is one major economic challenge that is facing the country as it is adversely affecting the nation’s financial well being leading to the loss of several billions of dollars to those few unpatriotic elements who are illegally profiting from the nation’s collective wealth at the expense of other citizens.
"Disturbed that the International oil companies are not giving the much desired cooperation to the Nigerian Navy, and this is most disturbing as the Chief of Naval Staff has also accused some of those oil companies of creating an enabling environment that aids oil bunkering, crude oil theft and piracy by leaving their oil wells open for years, rather than having them sealed, an action that is clearly against all known International best practises.
