Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State today swore-in Justice Sulaiman
Durosinlohun Kawu as the substantive Chief Judge of the state.
Performing the swearing-in ceremony at the Government House, Ilorin, the governor charged the new Chief judge to lead the way and chart a right course towards ensuring rapid dispensation of justice.
The governor who expressed reservations over the persistence era of impunity in the country called on the Judiciary not to allow itself to be used but to discharge its statutory roles accordingly.
He also advised the new Chief Judge to bring to bear his sterling quality and wealth of experience with a view to repositioning the judiciary.
While congratulating him on what he described as a well-deserved appointment, the governor tasked him to provide all that were required to enhance quick dispensation of justice to ensure those seeking redress got fair hearing.
The governor also disclosed that the government had approved peculiarity allowance to all staff of the judiciary in response to the JUSUN's agitations and to avert impeding strike action.
In his introductory remarks, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Kamaldeen Ajibade said section 27(1) of the 1999 constitution vested power on the state governor to appoint another Chief Judge of the state on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council, subject to confirmation of the appointment by the House of Assembly after the retirement of any Chief Judge.
He further explained that retirement of Justice Ayinla Bamigbola informed the recommendation by the NJC of Justice Sulaiman Kawu to the governor and his appointment was duly confirmed by the state House of Assembly.
Ajibade added that the processes of the Chief Judge's confirmation were expedited in view of the fact that no vacuum should be created in the Judiciary and to sustain a continuum in the smooth and prompt dispensation of justice in the state.
The newly sworn-in Chief Judge, Justice Sulaiman Kawu in his acceptance speech thanked the governor for his appointment and promised to justify the confidence reposed on him.
Justice Kawu who praised the governor for approving the peculiarity allowances among other appealed to the government to ensure autonomy for the state judiciary as enshrined in the law.
