Gov. Yero frees 1,100 inmates Appeals to NUJ for cooperation

Irked by the congestion in the Kaduna state prison, the Kaduna State government has secured the release of over 1,100 persons held behind the bars.  They comprise of 500 inmates and over 600 on awaiting trials, those with long detention, old age and on health grounds like HIV/AIDs et cetera.
Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero said that the gesture is part of government’s actions to decongest the prison and give life to those detained for just a token of fine and without people to help them.
The governor who was speaking at the fifth commencement of the state chapter of the NUJ press week appealed to NUJ to cooperate and partner with government for people to know what it is doing.
“We have many things to do to return Kaduna State to where it should be.  We need the support of the media,” He emphasized
Pointing out that many things done in Kaduna including the political posers about are by certain people from other Northern States who still hold that belief that Kaduna is the capital of the North and if they do not have it there, they have done nothing and have started nothing; “he noted.
The Governor assured that, he will put Kaduna right if he wins in 2015, calling on the people to support the election as it is not for Nigerians along; because “if you succeed to do it well by correcting the anomalies of the 2011 episode, the election will be free and fair”.
He appealed that insecurity and insurgency should be taken as national issue, calamity and concern and advised that the people eschew inciting speeches, pointing out that those who do it do so because they do not have hope and want trouble and always send their children out when there is crisis.
He decried politicians and people who abuse or criticize others for inordinate desire, recalling that Kaduna State was worst hit by the post-presidential election violence of 2011 and appealed that such should not be allowed to repeat again in the state.

“We should make such situation as back to sender to the politicians because they don’t have the interest of the people at heart”, Governor Yero noted.

He appealed to the media to report the truth and be guided by God’s words for justice as well as the ethics of the profession, emphasizing that “NUJ should cooperate and partner with the state government for people to know what we are doing.  You should check the weaknesses of leaders and advise instead of castigating.  Please, we appeal for support to make Kaduna better”.
